Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street bosses have confirmed that Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) has a long journey ahead of her after her video ordeal.

Last month, a private video of Asha was leaked from Corey Brent's phone by Kelly Neelan, which has resulted in Asha being tormented by her school friends.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media in a Corrie press Q&A, the soap's executive producer Iain MacLeod revealed that Asha's storyline still has a way to go, but she will be helped by Roy's niece Nina in the coming weeks.

"It certainly has a way to go. It's part of a long-term direction for Asha as a struggle with her self-esteem," MacLeod said. "Nina's role in that is to be a brilliant friend and supporter.

"Nina is used to having people look askance at her and talk about her behind her back. She's learned to be out and proud, own her life and own her life story. So she is instrumental in helping Asha put herself together emotionally after she's done with this video."

MacLeod went on to add that Nina will also help Dev with how he deals with the situation.

"Dev's struggle with it is completely understandable, really," he said.

"He wants to wade in and fix it all – this is his little girl...He tries his best – with some input from Nina, who gives him a stern talking-to. This shifts his attitude to what Asha has done."

MacLeod also said that the show's writing team were surprised by how difficult it is in real life to get a private video of yourself removed from a website.

"When we were talking about the story, huge numbers of our writing team were saying: 'They can't have this video online surely? All Dev needs to do is contact whoever's hosting the video and they'll take it down as it's illegal'," MacLeod explained.

"But actually our research has told us that it isn't that straight-forward. These videos are sometimes uploaded onto websites without the participants' consent and then getting them taken down is an absolute nightmare.

"It can take months and then they just pop up somewhere else. For us it was a really eye-opening experience researching the story. It's a scary story but hopefully it might give some of the audience pause for thought around hitting record on a video call."

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm on ITV.
