Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon has defended her character Bethany Platt and Daniel Osbourne's (Rob Mallard) controversial kiss.

Last week saw Daniel's wife Sinead Tinker (Katie McGlynn) pass away from cervical cancer in heartbreaking scenes, though shortly beforehand she had found out about Daniel's infidelity.

Sinead urged her husband to forgive himself for the kiss, though many fans were left unhappy with the cheating twist.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the Pride of Britain Awards, however, Lucy defended the storyline, also revealing that Sinead's final episode made her emotional.

"I thought it was amazing," she said. "Katie McGlynn and Rob were just amazing and I cried the whole way through the episode.

"Obviously people weren't happy with the episode, and with me, but I think it was important. Corrie did that to add to the drama but I think it was important to show that Daniel was grieving so much and in that moment he was just looking for some comfort. It was a really good episode, it was really hard to watch.

"At the moment, we've had quite a lot of stuff together in the past few weeks because we film so far ahead, so you will see it lingering a little bit but nothing will happen yet, I don't think. You'll have to wait and see – I don't even know."

Speaking previously about abuse she has received online, Lucy said: "People are not very happy with me! It's been really hard. It's one of those stories that's so important and so many people have been affected by it.

"Everyone who watched it will be able to relate to it in a kind of way. And there have been a few nasty comments on my social media.

"But do you know what I find funny? People sometimes can't differentiate between me as a person and the character I play. It's just like, 'You are the worst person in the world!'"

The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, in partnership with TSB, will broadcast on ITV on November 5 at 8pm. Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
