Coronation Street has dropped a first look at Jane Hazlegrove as Gemma Winter's mother Bernie on the soap as she meets Chesney Brown for the first time.

In a new preview clip from tonight's (July 24) episode, Bernie cradles Gemma's belly in the Rovers Return as the latter reveals she is expecting quadruplets.

Chesney, sitting next to Bernie, tries to make an impression and introduce himself, though Gemma's mother looks less than impressed as she says: "He don't look like he could knock the skin off a rice pudding, let alone anything else."

Things don't get much better as Bernie calls him 'Chutney' repeatedly, and eventually gets him to go away as she tries to talk to Gemma.

With Bernie's arrival on the cobbles, Gemma is keen to give her a chance – though twin brother Paul is sceptical and warns Gemma that it will end in tears.

Speaking about Bernie, Jane said earlier this month: "She's not overly maternal. I think you could guess that from the way Gemma and Paul have turned out and they left home as soon as they could!

"For Bernie, parenting got in the way of her having a good time. She loved her kids but they weren't her priority and feeding and caring for them would always have been a bit of an after-thought.

"She is closer to Gemma than Paul as Gemma lived with her. But I think that Gemma was the more mature one in the relationship and was probably the one looking after Bernie, not the other way around – which is ironic, as Bernie says she is there to help Gemma with the kids!"

Coronation Street airs Bernie's first scenes tonight (July 24) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
