Paramount has released the trailer for Roofman, a star-studded crime drama based on a crazy real-life story.

The film follows a former army ranger who is struggling to make ends meet for his family, and decides to start stealing from McDonald's restaurants.

His method involves cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname the film is titled after.

Things get weirder from there, as he escapes from jail and hides out in a Toys 'R' Us for six months.

The trailer seemingly reveals that it's at the store where most of the film takes place, flashing back to his McDonald's robberies and prison break. As he goes about his day-to-day, he uses his knowledge of the CCTV system to avoid detection and keep tabs on the staff.

But the trailer also reveals a wrinkle in his plan, as he starts to fall for a woman who works in the store.

He introduces himself and a romance starts to form, but it might prove to be his undoing.

Deadpool & Wolverine's Channing Tatum leads the film as Jeffrey Manchester, with Civil War's Kirsten Dunst as romantic interest Leigh. There's also The Toxic Avenger's Peter Dinklage, Ted Lasso's Juno Temple, Andor's Ben Mendelsohn, The Residence's Uzo Aduba, Spider-Man's Tony Revolori and Knives Out's LaKeith Stanfield.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tatum explained that he never met the real Manchester, due to him serving a 40-year service in prison, but has had multiple in-depth phone calls with him.

"I really hope Jeff likes the movie," the actor said. "He's made some bad decisions in his life. That is a fact. But he is probably the first one to tell you that. But I just find him such a beautiful and unfortunate soul."

He did reveal that they filmed in a lot of the actual locations the story took place in, and that the real-life people who were actually involved are also in the movie.

Roofman is coming to theatres soon.
