Matt Damon is in line for a return as Jason Bourne.

The actor and director Paul Greengrass have opened talks with Universal Pictures to reunite for their third movie together in the Bourne series, Deadline reports. The original film was directed by Doug Liman.

Universal apparently plans to move back its next Bourne spinoff sequel starring Jeremy Renner, so that Damon's comeback is released on July 15, 2016 - a date already assigned to an as-yet-untitled Bourne film.

Renner's next outing in the franchise is to be directed by Justin Lin. Despite starting negotiations with Damon, the studio reportedly still wants to release Renner's film in the future and continue the series.

Universal is yet to comment on the report.

Longtime Bourne franchise producer Frank Marshall denied in June that Damon would return.
