David Fincher has entered talks to direct Gone Girl.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo filmmaker is in line to tackle 20th Century Fox's adaptation of novelist Gillian Flynn's bestselling thriller, reports Variety.

Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea are attached to produce through their Pacific Standard banner alongside Leslie Dixon.

Gone Girl centres around husband-of-the-year Nick Dunne, whose charming but difficult wife Amy disappears on the day of their fifth wedding anniversary.

As the town slowly turns against their former golden boy, Nick is dragged into a spiral of lies and evasions, as the true fate of his spouse remains unsolved.

It is unknown whether Witherspoon will star as Amy in the adaptation.

Fincher is also attached to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Girl Who Played With Fire.
