Marvel Studios' newest film Thunderbolts* has debuted with a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating.

The 36th film in the superhero franchise, which follows a group of anti-heroes who don't want to work together against one of the MCU's most powerful villains, is out this week.

Ahead of its release, plenty of reviews from critics who have seen the film already have been published, and lots of them are positive.

At the time of writing, Thunderbolts* has an 89% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes from 135 critic reviews.

So where does that land the film in the Rotten Tomatoes MCU movie rankings?

Although this is is subject to change, currently Thunderbolts* is ranked in 14th place, right behind Doctor Strange (which also has 89% but from 387 reviews) and above Ant-Man and the Wasp (87%).

It's also the best score an MCU film has received since Spider-Man: No Way Home. which released in December 2021.

That means that Thunderbolts* has a better Rotten Tomatoes score than Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Deadpool and Wolverine.

Of course, Rotten Tomatoes scores aren't everything, and both Guardians 3 and Wakanda Forever made $850 million at the box office, while Deadpool's third outing did $1.3 billion. Will Thunderbolts* do as well with fans?

In Digital Spy's review, we called the film "an MCU throwback in the best way, one that allows its characters and own story to be the main focus rather than wider concerns.

"Like James Gunn did with Guardians 3, director Jake Schreier has been able to put his own stamp on it."

Thunderbolts* is released in UK cinemas on 1 May and in US cinemas on 2 May.
