The trailer for Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's new movie The Smashing Machine has been released, and he's almost unrecognisable in it.

The film, from prolific indie studio A24, sees the wrestler and actor play MMA fighter Mark Kerr, a two-time UFC heavyweight champion and Pan American gold medal winner, to name just a few achievements.

The biographical sports drama will not only chronicle his illustrious career, as well as his substance abuse and relationship with ex-wife Dawn Staples.

Johnson has donned a wig and a lot of facial prosthetics to transform into Kerr, and you'd be hard-pressed to realise that it's him. In the trailer, there's a few moments where his usual physical tics give it away, but apart from that, it's hard to tell it's him.

The film serves as a Jungle Cruise reunion, as Emily Blunt plays Staples. It's also the solo directorial debut of Benny Safdie, who co-directed Uncut Gems (an A24 film which provided a late-stage prestige role for Adam Sandler) with his brother Josh.

Johnson and Blunt will also be working together again on a mobster movie, described as a 'Goodfellas meets The Departed', directed by Martin Scorsese, and co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Apparently it was the duo of Johnson and Blunt who actually brought the idea to Scorsese and DiCaprio and got it off the ground, so it looks like these two have really formed a strong creative partnership with each other.

Elsewhere, he is reprising the role of Maui in live-action for Disney's upcoming Moana remake.

The Smashing Machine will be released on October 3 in both US and UK cinemas.
