The Goonies is officially getting a sequel.

The family-friendly adventure comedy is one of the tentpole cult classics of the 1980s, and there's been talk of a follow-up going back decades.

But now it looks like it's really, actually happening.

Variety reports that the film is going ahead at Warner Bros, with Steven Spielberg back as producer and Chris Columbus, who wrote the original film's script, also on board in a production role.

But it's a mix of old and new, as Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Old Henry's Potsy Ponciroli has been hired to write the script. That means that there's no plot details available at the current time, sadly.

A director also hasn't been attached to the sequel yet, while it's unknown if stars like Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan and Josh Brolin will return to reprise their roles.

Back in 2023, Ke Huy Quan — who went on to huge success in Everything Everywhere All at Once — explained why a sequel hadn't happened by that point.

"We had numerous scripts, but there was not one script that felt it could live up to what the original was," he said at the time.

"Sadly we lost the captain of our ship Dick Donner, and I really don't know if there's going to be a Goonies 2, but I would really love to revisit the character of Data if there is an opportunity. That’s the movie I thought I would need to make a career comeback."

Richard Donner, who helmed The Goonies as well as Scrooged, Superman, and more, passed away at the age of 91 in 2021.

The Goonies can currently be streamed as part of a Netflix UK and Ireland subscription.
