Hawkes's character takes in Elizabeth Olsen's lost soul Martha, but as their relationship takes a turn for the unpleasant, Martha flees and tries to piece back together her fractured psyche.

On working with the impressive newcomer Olsen, Hawkes said: "It didn't matter that she was inexperienced. She was fantastic from the first moment, so surprising.

"For someone who's playing their first lead in a film showing up so fully-formed, both as an actress and person, she's wise beyond her years... I just can't wait to see what her career holds."

Director Durkin added: "She acts with a lot of ease. She doesn't ever seem like she's trying to convey anything, she just conveys it. She could silently do a lot with her eyes, you could tell so much from watching her."

Martha Marcy May Marlene debuts in UK cinemas on February 3.
