Spoilers: Fassbender doesn't die in this December's Assassin's Creed movie. How do we know? Well, he's due to return in a sequel that's already planned, according to a report by Hollywood insider The Tracking Board.

Most of the production team is also set to return, but it isn't clear if director Justin Kurzel will be heading up the follow-up.

Given the size of the game's fanbase, it's not a huge surprise that New Regency is planning to attempt to turn it into a lucrative franchise, though the fact a sequel is being planned so far in advance of the debut's release does hint at a huge confidence behind the movie, which is perhaps fueled by the mostly positive reaction to the initial shots of Fassbender in character.

After investing $125 million into the project, along with co-financiers Alpha Pictures International and RatPac Entertainment,  New Regency seems comfortable with the financial risk of bankrolling a sequel so soon, at least.

Assassin's Creed stars Fassbender as Aguilar in a new story created for the film. It will still be based around genetic memory hopping into the minds of ancestors - 15th century Spain, in this case - and the war between the Assassins and the Templars, but with a new cast of characters and a fresh story.
