With roles in several major franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Men in Black, Chris Hemsworth is one of the most recognisable stars in the world. The Australian actor does, however, dip his toes outside of the tentpole feature.

One of his upcoming projects is Subversion, an action thriller that is being directed by German filmmaker Patrick Vollrath. He's not alone either, as the Thor star is joined by Yesterday actor Lily James and Peaky Blinders' Joe Cole among others.

Developed by Amazon MGM Studios and written by Andrew Ferguson, the film is billed as a "high-stakes" thriller, and is set in the dangerous criminal world of underwater drug smuggling.

While the action thriller has no release date, we do have a first-look at Hemsworth during filming. Another behind-the-scenes picture depicts co-star Teresa Palmer, who is known for appearing in A Discovery of Witches and The Fall Guy.

Subversion sees Hemsworth portray a once-promising naval commander who is strongarmed and blackmailed by a cartel-like organisation, who order him to pilot a dangerous submarine which is carrying illegal cargo across international waters.

"Thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with a Coast Guard officer (James) in hot pursuit, he must outmanoeuvre blockades and navigate perilous threats, both inside and outside the submarine," continues the logline.

In addition to the aforementioned quartet, the cast for the film includes Michael Peña, Simone Kessell, Robert John Burke, David Wenham, Damon Herriman, CJ Bloomfield and Alex Meraz.

Hemsworth, who will be seen in Avengers: Doomsday later this year, has some other upcoming other projects, with the actor set to join the Kick-Ass franchise in Stuntnuts: The Movie.

He will also lead Kockroach, a period crime drama based on William Lashner's 2007 novel of the same name. The action is set in New York City, and follows a mysterious stranger's rise through the criminal underworld.

Subversion, Stuntnuts: The Movie and Kockroach don't have release dates, while Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 18 December.
