The Sinner's second season looks every bit as haunting as the first.

A cryptic trailer for the new episodes sends Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) back to his hometown in rural New York to help a former colleague's daughter investigate the brutal murder of parents by their 11-year-old son (Elisha Henig).

Right away, Harry suspects that "something might have happened" to the boy prior to his parents' demise, especially when the child admits under questioning that "it wasn't supposed to hurt".

The missing piece of this mysterious puzzle may be Vera (Avengers: Infinity War's Carrie Coon), who seems to be the link between the boy and the powerful people who want the killing to remain unsolved.

"This is so far beyond anything you could understand," she warns. "You have no idea."

Jessica Biel, star of The Sinner's Golden Globe-nominated first season, remains involved in the show as an executive producer but she previously ruled out reprising her role as convicted killer Cora Tannetti this season.

However, Biel reversed that stance just last week and claimed that a Cora appearance in the second season is theoretically possible because the latter half is "still being developed and looked at".

"Lucky for me, no matter what, I will always be able to be a part of the show [as a producer] and I'm very proud of it," she added.

The Sinner returns to the USA Network on Wednesday, August 1 at 10pm ET. Netflix recently confirmed to Digital Spy that it does not yet have a premiere date set for the UK.
