Note: contains spoilers for The Sinner seasons one and two.
The Sinner season one, which first began its life on USA Network, was a binge-watch revelation when it eventually made its way onto Netflix. The central mystery, which revolves around Jessica Biel's Cora Tannetti committing a sudden (and seemingly random) murder, is supremely gripping – even if it did include a fairly huge plot hole.
And then season two landed and was equally as compelling, exploring the motives of a child who murders his "parents".
But now our sights are firmly set on season three after it was officially confirmed that the show is returning.
So, what can we expect from the next chapter? Here's everything you need to know.
The Sinner season 3 release date: When will it land?
This is a case Detective Harry Ambrose could solve in less than a millisecond.
What to Read Next
Season one went up on Netflix UK on November 7, 2017, season two landed on November 9, 2018, so we're guessing season three will hit the streaming platform in early November 2019.
Case closed!
The Sinner season 3 cast: Who'll be in it?
Here's where things get just a little more complicated.
Despite Jessica Biel's magnetic presence in the first season, she was relegated to a producer role for season two.
That's because her story was completely told in the first season, to the extent that no-one thought a second season would ever happen, further suggested by the fact that it was nominated for a number of awards in the miniseries category.
But telly doesn't work like that, and you don't put a stop to a hugely successful series just because the narrative has drawn to a natural conclusion.
We know that Bill Pullman will once again play Detective Harry Ambrose, the only real constant in both series one and two, and we also know that Magic Mike's Matt Bomer will be taking on the lead role.
"Beyond excited to work with the incredible cast and creative team on @thesinnerusa, a show I’m already a huge fan of," Bomer said in a post on Instagram. "It’s also nice to be coming home to the place where it all began, @usa_network. Wait until you see what’s in store for season 3! @drsimonds @therealbillpullman @jessicabiel @mccumber_chris @dawnolmstead @oneill1406."
But despite her absence in season two, people haven't stopped asking Biel if she'll one day return as Cora.
"It's possible. It is, I think – so I think I can say that," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "Is it probable? I don't know. I don't think so, simply because we're not quite sure how she would fit in anymore, in a way that would hold and maintain the integrity of the show and what we want to do with future seasons.
"And you know, it pains me to say that a little bit because I love this character and at one time I really thought that maybe season two would be about Ambrose and Cora."
"But our writers exhausted all options, with every type of Cora storyline, and as a creative team we really looked at it very specifically and acutely and said, 'This is just not what our show is'.
"So the answer is I don't know, it could be possible. But I'm not sure, I'm not sure it will ever happen."
Speaking to Variety prior to the season three announcement, showrunner Derek Simonds said: "If given a season three, we're definitely sticking to our anthology model where we'll be introduced to a new cast of characters and a new crime for Ambrose to solve.
The Sinner season 3 plot: What will happen?
We know even less about what the actual storyline will involve, except that it'll probably involve a freaky, very sudden murder and potentially some form of memory loss. And Bill Pullman will obviously show up at some point.
But perhaps we can glean some clues from a previous interview with Simonds about the team's approach to storytelling.
"We're so addicted to closure right now in this time in storytelling, and I think staying in an area of ambiguity and inviting the viewers' imagination is a really powerful thing, and stories should do more because it lingers more and resonates more," he told Variety.
"On a basic emotional level I feel there is enough closure just because characters have arrived at a truth. When they finally know the whole story, there is a pain in that and the truth is often very hard, but there is a freedom to move past it because they know what it is — they know what happened."
So maybe don't expect The Sinner season three to give you all the answers.
The Sinner season 3 trailer: When will it land?
Because The Sinner airs episodically in the States long before it lands in full on UK Netflix, the trailers run earlier than you might expect.
We got our first look at season two back in June last year, so expect a June / July debut for season three's first tease.
We've stuck the trailer for season two above (yup, we're still thinking about it, even after all this time), but we'll replace it when the new footage finally arrives.
