In case anyone still has any doubts, Spoby did end up happily ever after on Pretty Little Liars. Case closed.

That's at least according to showrunner I Marlene King, who has reassured everyone that Spencer and Toby "was and is end game".

During the season finale, we saw Toby work out the difference between Spencer and her evil twin Alex, and it is later mentioned that all is well with the couple.

Yet many fans still had their doubts about whether they actually ended up together, especially as Spencer didn't get a ring on her finger – note that couples Ezria, Emison and Haleb all got engaged.

Taking to Instagram, King has now set the record straight, writing: "As the person who created Spoby, it never occurred to me that Spoby fans would not be happy with the finale.

"That moment when Toby knew in his heart who the real Spencer was... for me it was a huge romantic moment. Worthy of an epic love story.

"For me it was understood.... Spoby was and is end game."

The showrunner has been doing the rounds clarifying things for fans on the Spoby front – she was asked back in June by Entertainment Weekly whether they would end up married and live happily ever after.

"Yes. I hope fans got that," King answered. "We literally did say, 'Could we have a double wedding? Or should we have a triple wedding?'

"That felt like it was a little too much. But I think they got their happy ending."

If that wasn't enough, she tweeted in July: "To Spoby fans, watch the scene where Toby knows Spencer from Alex. I hope in time u realize the epic love and romance in that moment."

She added that "Spoby is together, but they needed some time and breath. That's my truth."

OK guys, if their creator says so, we think it is so.
