Paramount+ has announced the return date for the second season of its London-set spy thriller The Agency, and released the first trailer and first-look images for the season. Slated for release on 21 June, all 10 episodes of season two will drop at the same time, allowing fans to binge-watch it in its entirety.

Based on Eric Rochant's French drama Le Bureau des Légendes, the show follows Michael Fassbender as Brandon Colby, codename 'Martian', a covert CIA agent who is ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station, where a past love unexpectedly reappears.

Joining Fassbender on the impressive cast are stars including Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston and Richard Gere. Dominic West and Hugh Bonneville guest star.

The season two synopsis reads: "Betrayed, compromised, and haunted by the woman he couldn’t save, CIA agent Martian’s world unravels as a mole hunt plunges London Station into chaos. As loyalties fracture, the truth becomes a weapon – and Martian’s only way out is deeper in."

The new trailer opens with a voiceover, in which Fassbender's character can be heard saying: "If they tell you I'm a traitor, it's the truth. I betrayed my country. Did I cause harm? Yes. I lied to my friends, my colleagues. I sacrificed people. I deserve my fate."

The tense new trailer features a lot of gunfire, some kidnappings, car chases, and what appears to be a torture scene. If the newly released images are anything to go by, it looks like season two will be full of suspense.

Season one received a mixed but mostly positive response from critics, scoring 66% on Rotten Tomatoes from 41 reviews.

Newsday described the show as a "good, smart, propulsive spy thriller", while Variety called The Agency "deeply engrossing".

"The considered pacing, and labyrinthine storytelling, feel apt. This is a show that knows what it is building to, over this season and future ones," penned The Age.

The Daily Telegraph said of the show: "Fassbender has such a strong screen presence that I could watch him unhappily pad around his kitchen all day. But The Agency doesn't go deep enough into the PMD, and insists on spending half of its time as a bog standard thriller."

Season 2 of The Agency is released on Paramount+ on 21 June.
