The Ultra Music founder unveiled the news during an on-stage interview with Pete Tong at IMS in Ibiza, while receiving a Pioneer Award.

Moxey said the show aims to "give a massive global platform for new and emerging artists".

He added (via Music Week): "When you think about the underground music that Ultra started with 20 years ago, and how it's now become a global lifestyle phenomenon today, to me, this is the next step in the evolution of this phenomenon.

"[The] show will take contestants, people with fantastic talent, and put them out to a mass audience.

"It really made sense to team up with Simon Cowell, Yahoo and Hamish Hamilton, who is probably the top entertainment director in Hollywood at the moment."

The winning DJ will bag a headline spot at a major electronic music festival, and will also secure a record contract with Ultra Records and Sony Music.

Cowell's latest project has previously been criticised by Fatboy Slim, who revealed that he refused to take part.

Gorgon City have also hit out at plans for the show, saying it is a bad thing for the industry.

Cowell, however, has promised that Ultimate DJ will treat electronic music with "respect".

The programme will air on Yahoo's streaming service Yahoo Live.
