Hart of Dixie will "not necessarily" be cancelled at the end of its current season, The CW's president Mark Pedowitz has said.

The Rachel Bilson comedy-drama was notably absent from the network's recent raft of early renewals, but Pedowitz announced at the TCA winter press tour that he is waiting to see how the current fourth season performs in the ratings before making a final decision.

"We are happy to see how it plays," he said. "If it ends, there's a great [series] finale. If it doesn't end, there's a great season finale."

Hart of Dixie's season four premiere attracted 1.22m viewers on December 15 - up on its season three premiere in October 2013.

The series returns to The CW with new episodes on Friday (January 16) at 8/7c.

Bilson stars Dr Zoe Hart, a New York surgeon who moves South to take up a position at a small medical practice.
