Marvel's Agents of SHIELD spoilers follow.

One of Agent Carter's most trusted allies is suiting up once again to help the time-displaced Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.

The final season of the ABC series will feature the LMD robot version of Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his SHIELD Agents jumping back to 1931 New York City, where they cross paths with one of the characters from Agent Carter.

Viewers will catch up with Enver Gjokaj's Daniel Sousa at a different spot in his timeline than when he was last seen romancing Peggy Carter.

"One of the things we think is so fun – especially with Coulson, who's just a fanboy for SHIELD history – is them just getting to walk right into [the group's history]," co-creator Jed Whedon told Entertainment Weekly.

"With Sousa, we had a good opportunity to hit that note with Agent Coulson."

Gjokaj also teased the characters' like-minded view of the world: "What's unexpectedly, for me, really fun is that we realised once we got Coulson and [Sousa] in the same scene that they're very similar."

While it remains shrouded in mystery how the SHIELD team will get back to the present, Chloe Bennet (aka Quake) recently told Digital Spy that the series finale is bound to be divisive.

"With the end of every series, I mean you look at Game of Thrones – if you have a fanbase that cares about the characters, they're going to have a possessiveness over how you want it to end, obviously. I do that all the time with shows," she said.

"I don't think we're going to make everyone happy, but they definitely do a really good job."

Agents of SHIELD season 7 will premiere on May 27 on ABC in the US.
