Agents of SHIELD season 7, episode 3 spoilers follow.
Agents of SHIELD's time-travelling final season saw the return of Daniel Sousa, but the Agent Carter star came close to returning to the universe earlier as a different character.
Enver Gjokaj – who is reprising his role of Sousa as the gang land in 1955 – previously had a very brief appearance in 2012's first Avengers movie as a New York cop. And speaking to TVLine, the actor revealed that there had been discussion "a while ago" for him to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as that character instead.

"It was very unexpected," he said, when asked about playing Sousa again. "There had been talk, for years, from [Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen].
"There was actually almost a bit of a 'false alarm' where this may have happened a while ago. There'd been talk of trying to get my appearance from The Avengers, as that cop.
"There was talk of tying in my cop that appeared in The Avengers, but nothing was ever official."
Gjokaj added that being approached for Agents of SHIELD's final season "came out of nowhere", commenting: "I was thrilled!"
But Hayley Atwell is unlikely to return as Peggy Carter this season.
Responding to a comment on Instagram, the star denied that she would be appearing in Agents of SHIELD before the show comes to an end (although she will reprise the role for Marvel's What If... on Disney+).
Agents of SHIELD season seven continues on Wednesday, June 17 on ABC in the US. A UK release date for season seven has yet to be confirmed.
