Hayley Atwell is returning to the MCU as part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday.

The actor is set to reprise her role as Agent Peggy Carter in the fifth Avengers film, according to Deadline.

Atwell first appeared as the MI6 agent in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, which saw Carter become Steve Rogers' love interest during World War II.

Following the war, Carter became one of the founders of SHIELD – where she serves as director.

The film notably saw the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) fatally throw a shield at Carter, cutting her in half.

Carter has also featured in Agent Carter, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and Avengers: Endgame.

Doomsday also sees the return of Chris Evans, though the specifics of his role are currently unknown. Atwell and Evans were initially set to appear in a stand-alone movie, but the story wasn't nailed down.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr will also return to the MCU for the film, playing the villainous Victor Von Doom, aka Doctor Doom.

"New mask, same task," he said after the shock reveal at Marvel's Comic-Con 2024 panel in July. "I like playing complicated characters."

Joe and Anthony Russo will direct the upcoming film, as well as the sixth Avengers movie, Secret Wars – which will also feature Doctor Doom. The filmmaking duo previously departed the franchise in 2019.

The cast of The Fantastic Four, Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* will also appear in both movies.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in cinemas on May 1, 2026.
