Sons of Anarchy showrunner Kurt Sutter has said that he has been fired from FX and spin-off series Mayans MC "for being an abrasive dick".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 59-year-old was dismissed by FX CEO John Landgraf and Disney TV Studios and ABC Entertainment chairman Dana Walden after complaints were logged against him.

Sutter also claimed that an investigation into the "unacceptable conditions" created on set had been launched.

In response to the decision, Sutter penned an open letter to "Team Mayans", which has now been obtained by THR. In it, he apologised for making "people feel less than or unsupported" and explained that this was "not the way [he] wanted to end [his] 18-year relationship" with the broadcaster.

Having previously announced that he was taking more of a backseat on the biker drama, writer and executive producer Sutter went on to explain that his "absence and subsequent behaviour when there, has only created confusion, chaos, hostility and is perceived as abandonment".

"Or at least that's how Disney has interpreted it. I'm sure it's true," he continued. "Clearly I've not been paying attention. My arrogance and chronic distraction has created wreckage. Just know, I adore this cast and crew."

He added: "I'm not sure what the fate of Mayans MC holds. But if it continues, you'll still be in good hands. As I said at the premiere, Elgin [James] is ready to take on the challenge of running the show.

"I'm sure FX will get him the support he needs to find and follow his vision. For those of you who wanted me gone, you win! For those of you who didn't, you win too. Although I will no longer be involved, I have no doubt the new team will move things forward with the same quality fans have come to expect."

FX and 20th Century Fox TV declined to comment.

Mayans MC airs on FX in the US. It is available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
