After four weeks of twists, turns, deception – and Alan Carr being one of the greatest reality TV contestants ever – The Celebrity Traitors is drawing to a close. Last night's penultimate episode left us with five players vying to win in next week's finale, and it appears that, largely thanks to Joe Marler, the Faithfuls could be set to stage one of the best comebacks ever.

Let's be honest, they've not been the best at the game this season – in fact, statistically they're the worst Faithfuls ever, with Jonathan Ross the only Traitor to be caught so far… and even that wasn't until episode 7. As such, whatever happens, many feel that the Traitors deserve to win this time, and they've been on course to do so for a while. That was until the latest episode, with the penny dropping for Joe Marler that Alan and Cat Burns have been pulling the wool over their eyes all along. Let's also not forget that Nick Mohammed had his own suspicions too, and actually named Cat at the latest Round Table.

Following Kate Garraway's banishment, Joe tried to rally the remaining Faithfuls – Nick and David Olusoga – to get Alan and Cat out in the finale, while also revealing his clever plan to get close to the two Traitors so they don't suspect his scheming. Given his closeness with Nick (and their previous history of working together) as well as the fact that the Traitors are outnumbered, it would appear the Faithfuls are set for a win.

However, it may not be as clear-cut as you'd think, with a key player that could still cause Joe's house of cards to come crashing down: David.

While Joe and Nick have been thick as thieves in recent episodes, David has wavered before, even voting for Nick in the roundtable earlier this week following the Ted Lasso star's (actually not) suspicious behaviour in the chess task.

What to Read Next

When Joe revealed his 'Alan and Cat' plan to David after last night's roundtable, David admitted he was "utterly drowning", as Joe conceded that the historian could "do what you want".

"It's impossible to trust anybody," David later admitted to audiences. "I presume there's two Traitors. That means I can't trust anyone, it would be crazy to do so."

The finale may well have one last roundtable, where the game could be up for Alan. However there is a world in which Nick is actually the next to go, especially if David continues to go on his past suspicions, and if Cat and Alan also go for him too.

Add to this the fact that banished players now can't reveal their status in the game, and David may think he's got a Traitor out.

If this is how it ends up playing out, you'd be left with two Traitors (Cat and Alan) and two Faithfuls (David and Joe) around the final fire pit, and likely a deadlock over whether to continue or banish another player. We'd bet on them deciding to banish, however, and in this scenario it may be likely to be Alan on the chopping block.

You'd then be left with David, Joe and Cat. However, if David is suspicious of Joe and his motives around banishing Cat and Alan, he may vote alongside Cat to banish the former rugby player. Alternatively, he could believe that he has got his two Traitors out in Nick and Alan, and decide to vote to stop the game altogether alongside Cat, outweighing Joe's likely vote to banish again.

In the latter scenario, with 2 votes to 1, Cat would win as the last remaining Traitor.

We'd theorise that the likeliest scenario is still that the Faithfuls do get Alan and Cat, given the widespread suspicion, with the Faithful ultimately triumphing. But don't count your chickens too soon. It's all to play for.

The Celebrity Traitors final episode airs on BBC1 on Thursday 6 Nov at 9pm and on iPlayer afterwards. The Traitors series 1-3 are streaming on BBC iPlayer.
