Kate Garraway, Nick Mohammad and Lucy Beaumont are all on the chopping block to be the next murdered Faithful in The Celebrity Traitors — but fans are convinced last week’s cliffhanger revealed a major spoiler. Only three Faithfuls even qualified to be murdered after Nick sabotaged the latest challenge, which saw two rival teams putting themselves in the shoes of the Traitors and predicting how they would answer a series of questions.

The Ted Lasso star believed his opposing team was more Faithful, and that, logically, it would help the Faithful in the long run to throw the game and let them win.

At the end of the episode, we saw Kate, Nick, and Lucy’s respective reactions as they each spun around to learn their fate. Kate’s face was covered by her scarf, Lucy gave absolutely nothing away, but Nick gasped and appeared to be smiling — leaving some viewers to think he must be relieved to see Claudia.

So if Nick is safe, who could be murdered instead?

Who do viewers think will be murdered?

A popular theory on Reddit is that comedian Lucy will be the unfortunate soul to get the chop.

In a thread titled 'Who Is Going To Be Murdered?', one user wrote: “I think it's Lucy because of how much screen time she got today. And Nick's shocked face at the end of the episode is probably because he was relieved he saw Claudia, not that the traitors were there.”

Another agreed: “I feel like they wouldn’t have kept Nick’s gasp in if he was the one going. I really hope he’s not leaving because he’s definitely my favourite! I want him to win.”

Others noted that in the most recent season of the US version, the producers pulled the same trick, closing the episode with a similar reaction to Nick’s.

One person explained: “I think the gasp is a fake-out. They did the same thing in the US season — one of the players gasped, making it look like they got murdered, and then they were fine next time.”

Using the same logic, another added: “They did a similar thing in US 3, showing one character majorly shocked — and they didn’t actually react that way when they turned around. Lucy is my pick to be murdered as well. Kate is way too chaotic and confused. Nick got some heat in this last episode.”

So is Nick’s reaction a red herring?

On the surface, Nick’s reaction screamed relief, suggesting he’s looking directly at Claudia. However, if ever there was a player who would be just as excited to know the true identity of the Traitors as he would be to still have his place in the game, it’s Nick.

Would he have the same reaction if Alan, Jonathan and Cat were standing before him too?

Our fear is that yes, he would. Nick would likely be thrilled to see the Traitors face to face, particularly since he’s correctly guessed two of them already. We can even imagine Nick caring more about being right than about winning at this point.

From the outside, it’s obvious the Traitors should kill Nick. He is by far their biggest threat — arguably the only real threat right now.

That edit of Nick’s reaction, however you interpret it, was clearly intentional. It’s either a clever double bluff or a cruel red herring, and Nick’s gasp could just as easily be shock as relief.

What’s Next?

If Nick is going, it’s hard to see the Faithful managing to catch a Traitor at all — at least not without the help of another Traitor.

Cat has accidentally backed herself into a tricky corner. After being a vocal supporter of the “Big Dog” theory – which exposed Sir Stephen Fry and Jonathan as the two players most likely to be picked as leaders of either the Faithful or the Traitors – she can’t possibly gun for anyone other than Jonathan now that Stephen has been banished.

The Traitors have partly got this far by remaining loyal to each other — something traditionally unheard of at this stage of the game. Together, they seem unstoppable, but that teamwork has to unravel eventually. And there isn’t an outcome where that time isn’t now.

If Lucy is the one to leave, the team will be rattled. It’s the murder that makes the most sense for the Traitors — it throws almost no suspicion their way and, if anything, just triggers more confusion.

The Celebrity Traitors is on BBC1 on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9pm, and on BBC iPlayer.
