Novak Djokovic had a cheeky request for a couple at Wimbledon after they got engaged during his opening match on Centre Court. The Serbian tennis ace faced opponent Wu Yibing on the first day of the sports tournament today, and during a break after the first set, cheering could be heard in the arena.

A couple had gotten engaged while attending Wimbledon, with Djokovic turning to the lovebirds in the stands to congratulate them.

He made heart symbols with his hands before turning to them and saying: "I want an invitation to the wedding."

The camera panned to the laughing couple sticking their thumbs up, seemingly granting him his wish, before sharing a kiss.

There was initially confusion as to what was happening, with BBC presenter Clare Balding theorising: "Maybe that thumbs up from Djokovic was to John [McEnroe]?"

"It was a heart he was making so maybe that was to John," commentator Andrew Cotter replied.

"Novak has just said he wants an invitation to the wedding," pundit John McEnroe said. "Apparently this lady was just asked if she would marry this gentleman. It’s quite a moment for these two."

Cotter then joked: "Alright, concentrate on the tennis, everyone," to which McEnroe replied, "That’s a high-risk strategy, isn’t it? Asking that question on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

"He probably mentioned it beforehand… he probably said, 'If by some chance I decided to do this, what would you say?' just to make sure."
