The windswept landscapes of Scotland's Outer Hebrides are set to take centre stage once again as filming has wrapped on the second season of BBC crime thriller An t-Eilean (aka The Island). The Scottish-Gaelic drama became one of the broadcaster's standout successes following its 2025 debut.
Praised for its atmospheric storytelling, striking scenery and celebration of Scottish heritage, the series quickly developed a loyal audience and earned widespread critical acclaim — as well as the drama and entertainment prize at Prix Circom 2025.
Production on the new four-part series concluded in mid-June 2026, with cast and crew returning to some of the same remote locations that helped defined the show's distinctive identity.
Once again, filming took place across the Isles of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, where dramatic coastlines, rugged moorland and isolated communities provide the backdrop for a new, gripping mystery.

The production, from Black Camel Pictures, has continued to make extensive use of the islands' natural landscapes, which became almost a character in their own right during the show's first run.

Among the locations featured previously was Amhuinnsuidhe Castle, a Victorian estate situated on Harris. The property doubled as the home of the influential Maclean family and could be featured again as the story returns to the islands. The village of Breasclete, which also appeared prominently in season one, has similarly been used for filming on the new episodes.
While much of the drama is rooted in the Hebrides, some urban sequences have been filmed in Glasgow, allowing the series to balance its remote island setting with scenes set elsewhere in Scotland.
An t-Eilean made headlines when it first launched in January 2025 as the BBC's most expensive Gaelic-language drama to date. The ambitious project was widely viewed as a landmark moment for Gaelic TV and was praised for bringing Scotland's native language to a mainstream audience.
For star Sorcha Groundsell, who plays Detective Sergeant Kat Crichton, the show's success represents something much bigger than TV. "I think it’s high time," the actor told The Hollywood Reporter.
"It is really an inspiring time and a necessary time to take ownership of our language and our culture and celebrate it for what it is, which is a source of incredible joy to so many people."
Sorcha also admitted that speaking Gaelic on screen presented its own challenges, despite having learned the language as a child. "A lot of us were feeling some pressure about our levels of fluency," she said.
"If anything, that makes it all the more important to participate in a show like this, because, if we maintain this feeling that our Gaelic is never good enough to use, no one will ever have a chance to use Gaelic."
The BBC clearly has confidence in the series following its breakout first season. While an official premiere date has yet to be confirmed, the second instalment is expected to air in either late 2026 or early 2027.

In the new episodes, Sorcha will reprise her role as Kat, who finds herself facing another complex murder investigation while also struggling with mounting pressures in her personal life.
According to the synopsis, the season opens with Kat feeling frustrated both professionally and personally as she balances caring for her ill father with tackling minor local crime. Matters quickly turn darker when the body of a young woman washes ashore, launching a major investigation that sends shockwaves throughout the community.
Also returning to the series is actor Sam James Smith as Ruaraidh Maclean, Kat's former adversary. Now running a local youth group, Ruaraidh becomes increasingly concerned that other young islanders may have disappeared, drawing him back into Kat's orbit as the investigation intensifies.
