ITV's brand-new serial killer drama The Dark, which has been adapted from GR Halliday's debut novel titled From the Shadows, has today unveiled a truly chilling first-look trailer – which Digital Spy can reveal exclusively.

The crime drama is set on the atmospheric Scottish countryside, and centres on the detective duo made up of DI Monica Kennedy (played by Outlander's Laura Donnelly) and her new police partner DC Connor Crawford (Karen Pirie's Mark Rowley).

The Dark's thrilling 'cat and mouse' investigation will focus on the hunt for a "twisted" masked murderer. "The killer lives among us," we hear the character of DI Kennedy saying at a press conference in the new trailer.

The moody new footage also reveals that the detectives are working against the clock to try and outsmart the dangerous culprit. "We have, what, ten hours? To identify his next victim," says the voice of Donnelly's Kennedy.

"When the body of a young man is found eerily staged in the idyllic Scottish wilderness, detective Monica Kennedy fears this is just the beginning of a terrifying campaign that will strike the heart of a rural community," the synopsis for ITV's The Dark reveals.

"As paranoia rises, suspicions and secrets are forced into the light, and the locals start to realise that there is a serial killer hidden amongst them."

What to Read Next

"With her experience of dealing with the darkest of humanity, Monica Kennedy quickly becomes entangled in a heightened game of cat and mouse with a cunning killer," the description adds. "Only she can stop this monster before he claims any more victims. But when her own history creeps up on her, she begins to lose trust in her own judgement. Will it be her own actions that are the biggest risk to herself and her family?"

The Dark also stars Helen Baxendale, who you'll likely recognise from Friends and Cold Feet, but who has also previously appeared in cosier crime series Death in Paradise and ITV's long-running Midsomer Murders.

Her character in this darker new drama is described as a "distraught mother" and, as it turns out, DI Kennedy's latest investigation could be linked to the case of her missing son.

Additional cast for this new series includes Emun Elliott (The Gold), Cal MacAninch (Silent Witness), Stella Gonet (Professor T), Phil McKee (Deadwater Fell), Tunji Kasim (Shetland), and Catherine McCormack (A Thousand Blows).

With ITV previously describing The Dark as "gripping", we have a feeling this is going to be a must-watch for fans of a good detective drama.

The Dark is coming soon to ITV and STV, and will stream on ITVX and STV Player this summer.
