Little Disasters, which has previously been described as a "complex psychological thriller with a mystery at its heart", will make its debut on Channel 5 this weekend, having first streamed on Paramount+ in May last year.

The series stars Jo Joyner – who you'll likely recognise from her breakout role in EastEnders as Tanya Branning, as well as her turn as Mandy Carter in Channel 4's Ackley Bridge – opposite big-screen star Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds, Troy).

Little Disasters has been adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughan, and centres on the bonds of female friendship by following four expectant mothers who met in an antenatal class.

This main ensemble of characters is made up of Jess (Kruger), Liz (Joyner), Mel (Emily Taaffe) and Charlotte (Shelley Conn).

Their relationships continue throughout motherhood, until something comes along to test it. As the synopsis explains: "The world of seemingly perfect stay-at-home mother Jess begins to unravel when she brings her baby daughter Betsy to the hospital with a head injury she can't explain. Her close friend and on-duty A&E doctor, Liz, must make the excruciating decision of whether to call social services."

This incident then sets off a chain of events, threatening both their friendship group and their families.

The cast of Little Disasters also includes The Split's Ben Bailey Smith, as well as Patrick Baladi (Line of Duty), Stephen Campbell Moore (The Gold), and JJ Feild (The Peripheral).

The six-part series is still available to stream on Paramount+, but will also air on Channel 5 from this weekend, with episode one premiering in the 9pm slot on Sunday, 14 June.

In a review (via Rotten Tomatoes), The Post NZ name-checked Kruger as "the biggest draw" of the show, saying her "pitch-perfect performance keeps you enthralled and guessing".

Collider's review said: "Through a thrilling psychological premise, Little Disasters hooks the viewer from the very first scene, forcing them to draw conclusions about Jess and Ed's innocence from the outside looking in."

Fans of Jo Joyner may also be interested to know about her highest-rated TV drama, according to the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which is actually a twisty Harlan Coben mystery.

Stay Close first dropped on Netflix back in 2021, and its exciting cast also boasted James Nesbitt, Cush Jumbo, Richard Armitage, Sarah Parish, Youssef Kerkour, and Suzy Eddie Izzard.

The series centred on a mum called Megan (played by Criminal Record's Jumbo), who is living happily with her children and soon-to-be husband – but her past is coming back to cause problems.

With eight episodes, it's also a brilliant weekend binge-watch.

Little Disasters premiered on Paramount+, and will air on Channel 5 on Sunday, 14 June.
