ITV has dropped a first-look at Cold Feet star Helen Baxendale's and Blue Lights director Gilles Bannier's new ITV drama The Dark.

Dubbed a "chilling serial killer drama" the brand new picture give a sneak peek at Helen Baxendale as "distraught mother Bethany Morgan" who has been "pushed to her limit after Detective Monica (Donnelly) appears on her doorstep once again with a case linked to her missing son".

They also reveal The Nevers' Laura Donnelly and Karen Pirie actor Mark Rowley in their new roles for the six-part series, where the two play detectives DI Monica Kennedy and DC Connor Crawford.

The broadcaster shares that the images tease Monica and Connor's "tense cat and mouse hunt for a twisted serial killer across the breathtaking Scottish countryside".

Giving a brief overview of what's to come, the synopsis details: "When the body of a young man is found eerily staged in the idyllic Scottish wilderness, detective Monica Kennedy fears this is just the beginning of a terrifying campaign that will strike the heart of a rural community. As paranoia rises, suspicions and secrets are forced into the light, and the locals start to realise that there is a serial killer hidden amongst them.

"With her experience of dealing with the darkest of humanity Monica Kennedy quickly becomes entangled in a heightened game of cat and mouse with a cunning killer. The brand new pics also give a glimpse of the dangerous, masked serial killer who is ready to strike again.

The Dark is based on GR Halliday's debut novel From the Shadows and has been adapted for television by Matt Hartley alongside writers Lena Rae and Nessah Muthy.

Produced by Poison Pen Studios (part of ITV Studios), Blue Lights' Bannier serves as lead director and executive producer on The Dark alongside Ben Stephenson, Preethi Mavahalli, Luke Woellhaf and Fern McCauley, who also executive produce.

The Dark will debut on ITV.
