Channel 4's new '80s-set drama The Siege, an adaptation of author Ben Macintyre's best-selling book being brought to screens by the award-winning Will Smith (Slow Horses), has just been given a first glimpse thanks to a new filming photo of one of its lead stars.

Danny Dyer, currently appearing in the second season of Disney's hit Rivals, is taking on the role of a police officer, and we've got our first look at the character in action – complete with the uniform.

The popular British actor and former EastEnders star is set to play PC Trevor Lock in the drama, inspired by real events, with the officer described as a "hero". He takes a pivotal role in the siege that the drama takes its name from.

"I am playing old bill, I've finally made it," Dyer said of the role, during a recent chat with Virgin Radio (via Female First).

"I'm really excited about playing someone who's a hero," he added. "This man only wanted to help old ladies cross the road and rescue cats out of trees and he got swept up in this very dangerous situation."

What to Read Next

The Siege has been described by Channel 4 as "a heart-in-mouth story" that involves "an extraordinary cast of characters from different walks of life" who are "thrown together by a seemingly insolvable conflict".

Set in London in the 1980s, the six-part series will unfold over a matter of days as an armed group took 26 people hostage at the Iranian embassy. What followed, according to the drama's synopsis, is a struggle for control of the situation, with the police, but also the soldiers of the SAS who "mounted plans for a daring mission to break the siege that would be witnessed by the watching world".

Channel 4 has said that the limited series will couple "thriller tension with poignancy, insight and humour", exploring a "pivotal moment in history, when Britain and the world held its breath".

In a previous statement, Channel 4's Chief Content Officer Ian Katz said that the show "is a heart-stopping, emotional thriller that reveals the little-known motivations of the hapless hostage-takers and the very human reality of what went on inside the embassy as the world looked on and Britain's most lethal soldiers practiced their high stakes assault".

In addition to Dyer, The Siege also stars David Morrissey (Sherwood, Daddy Issues) and Motaz Malhees (The Voice of Hind Rajab, 200 Metres).

The ensemble also includes Kevin Doyle (Happy Valley), Alexej Manvelov (Dept Q), Stephen Campbell Moore (The Gold), Alex Jennings (The Crown), and Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing).

The Siege is coming to Channel 4.
