Cape Rock Killer, the third instalment in the award-winning anthology series The Twelve, is now streaming on ITVX in the UK. The drama stars Sam Neill (Untamed, Peaky Blinders) as the character of formidable defence barrister Brett Colby SC, a constant across all three seasons.
A synopsis for Cape Rock Killer, described as a season where "the stakes are higher and more personal", reveals that Colby is "thrust into a sensational murder trial to defend the husband of a lifelong friend".
As the story unfolds across the episodes, the trial is set to reopen a "chilling" cold case dating back to the late '60s, which will end up "forcing the twelve jurors to confront a mystery that threatens to unravel their own lives".
Each season tells the story of a different fictional case, set in a courtroom, with the focus extending to the jury.
The Australian anthology series first debuted on screens in 2022, and is based on the 2019 Belgian miniseries De twaalf, co-created by Bert Van Dael and Sanne Nuyens and described as a psychological thriller.
"We found it thought provoking to focus on the ordinary people that get drawn by lot for jury duty," the creators explained, during a 2019 interview with Variety. "Most of the courtroom dramas we know focus on the lawyers or the defendant, but we really wanted to have the point of view of normal people."
What to Read Next
Reviews for the 2022 season one debut of the Australian drama The Twelve aren't that strong, sitting with a score of 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics appear to criticise the show's pacing, theatrics and clichés, although it seems to also be noted that fans of the genre will find things to love.
"Crime lovers will find plenty to intrigue them; for the casual viewer, the jury's very much out," wrote London Evening Standard.
Meanwhile, The Age said the show "doesn't reinvent the courtroom drama, but the many detailed strands give it a bitter momentum", adding: "Fans of the genre will quickly be drawn to it."
Sam Neill leads the cast of The Twelve, with an ensemble also including Danielle Cormack (Wentworth), Ewen Leslie (The Cry), and Sarah Peirse (Stateless).
Neill, who famously starred in the 1993 classic Jurassic Park, has more-recently been seen in Netflix's hit police procedural Untamed alongside Eric Bana, as well as Peacock's mystery-drama Apples Never Fall.
Neill also played the role of Chief Inspector Campbell in the BBC's beloved period series Peaky Blinders, and the actor previously described his character as being "a tough cop" from Northern Ireland who was on a mission to clean up Birmingham in 1919.
The first two seasons of Australian courtroom drama The Twelve are already available on ITVX, with the third now entering the ITVX top 10.
