The Society star Kathryn Newton has opened up about returning to the role of Allie Pressman in the "insanely addictive" Netflix drama. Released in 2019, the show follows a group of teenagers who return home from a school trip to find their town empty and their parents vanished.

After initially being renewed for a second season, the show was cancelled after just one, with the streamer blaming COVID-19.

Season one ended on a huge cliffhanger when it was revealed that the parents were still in the original town and were mourning the teens as missing or dead.

Speaking to HELLO! at the London premiere of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, Newton addressed her role in the teen drama, saying she is often stopped on the street to talk about it.

Addressing a possible return, Newton said she would reprise the role "in a heartbeat" if Netflix decided to pick the show back up.

She said: "I loved The Society and the cast is iconic. Everyone on that cast, I think we just got lucky. I don't know what happened.

"Chris Keyser picked a really good group of young actors, and they're all doing such amazing things.

"So I would do it in a heartbeat. I talk to Chris Keyser all the time, the creator and showrunner. You know what? Anytime, Netflix!"

The cancellation devastated fans, with some taking to social media to share their disappointment.

"The audacity of Netflix to have a planned 2nd season of the society, have the cast, crew and scripts ready to go, the fans waiting, only to CANCEL it even though it would have definitely trended top 5 and have stayed there for weeks is bullshit," penned one fan.

Another wrote: "Can’t believe @netflix has cancelled The Society. If the reason is Covid I don’t mind waiting another year or two for it, but please don’t cancel one of the best shows on Netflix and leave us on such a cliffhanger."

The show was also popular among critics and holds an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 36 reviews.

"The Society is insanely addictive, a mix of not just The Walking Dead but Lord of the Flies and M. Night Shyamalan's Fox series Wayward Pines," penned Uproxx.

The Sydney Morning Herald wrote: "The series deftly balances its entertainment value with some thoughtful exploration of issues relevant to a young-adult audience. More engrossing than you might expect."

The Society is available to stream on Netflix.
