Rebooted crime drama Matlock has launched its new season in the UK. The series features Kathy Bates as the titular lawyer, and first premiered last year.
Based on the original '80s and '90s legal drama, Bates plays Madeline Kingston as she goes back to work in order to seek justice for her daughter after the latter's death amid the opioid epidemic.
Following the second season's premiere in the US back in October, UK fans can now watch new episodes weekly on Sky Witness and NOW on Wednesdays, with the first dropping yesterday.
Matlock sees Madeline get a job at a prestigious law firm that she believes buried crucial evidence that could’ve saved her daughter Ellie, and she "rebrands herself as ‘Matty’ Matlock, a needy widow who is often underestimated due to her age and naturally calm demeanour".
The moniker is a nod to the original Matlock, which exists in this series' universe as Ellie was a big fan of the show.

She helps the law firm with their cases and gradually infiltrates the team "in order to find the information she needs to finally get to the truth".
"However, Matty is one hell of a lawyer, who knows just what it takes to win cases, and she quickly finds herself bonding with her younger, and at times highly ambitious, associates," the synopsis adds. "As she puts it, being an older woman is useful, 'because no one sees her coming'."
Matlock has drawn huge acclaim, with the second season sitting at a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, Pop Culture Planet lauding it as "equal parts funny and emotional" and adding that "the show’s genuinely shocking twists and turns will keep you hooked".
Pittsburgh Tribune Review suggested there were "good twists through the first two episodes", while Culturess wrote in their review of season 1 that the series is "an ideal portrayal of what a reboot can and should be".
The original series ran between 1986 and 1995, and starred Andy Griffith as Ben Matlock as he took on a case each week.
Matlock season 2 airs on Sky Witness and NOW in the UK, with new episodes every Wednesday. Season 1 is streaming via Sky Witness and NOW.
