Prison drama with a twist Waiting for the Out has just released a first trailer, seeing philosopher Dan teaching classes to inmates only to realise something about his own past.
Waiting for the Out stars Josh Finan as Dan, with a first trailer following him on his first day on the inside.
"Welcome to prison," Dan is greeted as he goes on to discuss themes such as dominance, freedom and luck with his class of inmates.
"However, through his work, Dan begins to dig deeper into his own past," the synopsis teases.
Dan grew up with a father (Gerard Kearns) who ended up in prison, as did his brother Lee (Stephen Wight) and uncle Frank (Phil Daniels).
While Dan's life has taken him down a different path, as he takes the job in prison he begins to worry obsessively that he may belong behind bars just like the rest of his family.
What to Read Next
"As Dan's personal crisis deepens his actions begin to threaten both his own future and his family's," the synopsis concludes.
Adapted by Utopia's Dennis Kelly, the series is inspired by Andy West's memoir The Life Inside.
"It's not at all unusual for the men in Andy West's family to end up in prison - but Andy is the only one that chose to be there," said Kelly when the project was announced in May (via BBC).
"His book is funny, insightful, beautiful, genuinely heartbreaking and nothing like what you’d expect it to be - we've tried to take that into the series. God alone knows if we've succeeded, but we've tried…"
Cast for the series is rounded out by Sex Education star Samantha Spiro as Dan's mother.
Playing the prisoners in Dan's classes are Andor star Alex Ferns, A Thousand Blows' Francis Lovehall, Top Boy's Josef Altin, House of the Dragon's Steven Meo, Heartstopper star Nima Taleghani, as well as Ric Renton, Tom Moutchi, Sule Rimi and Charlie Rix.
Also starring are Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo, Sophia Brown, Neal Barry and Jude Mack.
Waiting for the Out airs its first episode on BBC One on 3 January at 9.30pm. All episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer on the same day.
