Richard Armitage has rebranded himself in recent years as the go-to man for a Harlan Coben adaptation, but now he's been announced for another crime drama. However, this time it's not a Coben story, and it's coming to ITV rather than Netflix.

Winter will see the Fool Me Once, Missing You and The Stranger actor play "unconventional" forensic pathologist Dr Ethan Winter, who is recognised as a genius and one of the top people in his field.

He often pairs up with "meticulous, no-nonsense" Detective Inspector Lauren Bell, played by The Couple Next Door season 2's Annabel Scholey. Together, the duo make a "formidable" team.

However, their partnership will be tested when someone close to Winter is murdered, and he is intent on running his own unofficial investigation.

The six-part series, based on the French series Balthazar, is said to tell a self-contained story every episode.

What to Read Next

"The team behind Winter are second to none and the ambition of David Allison's scripts is very exciting and will attempt to shake up the genre that we've grown to love," Armitage said.

"Ethan Winter is a compelling character treading the line between diligent professional and reckless maverick. He has a painful secret and a fatalistic self-destruct button over which his finger constantly hovers. I'm thrilled to be returning to ITV."

Scholey added: "I am thrilled to be joining ITV and Eagle Eye Drama as part of the Winter team, and to be working alongside the brilliant Richard Armitage on these fantastic scripts.

"Our characters' tempestuous relationship will be a total thrill to explore, and I am excited to step into the wonderfully dry shoes of DI Lauren Bell."

Eagle Eye Drama bosses Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino stated that they are attempting to "create a different visual grammar for the show", which sounds like it could be intriguing.

Filming for the series will take place in Bristol and Belgium next year.

Winter will air on ITV and STV, and stream on ITVX and STV Player. It will be available in the US through PBS Masterpiece.
