ITV has unveiled a first official look at new MI5 thriller Betrayal. Starring Vigil's Shaun Evans, the series follows an agent who finds himself under investigation after a man he connects with is killed.

A first set of stills from the show have now been released, showing Evans in character alongside co-stars including Romola Garai, and comes after first-look filming pictures emerged earlier this year.

Betrayal, which follows "the fragile, tangled web of human relationships, where loyalty and deception collide", centres on Evans's character John Hughes, "a mid-career MI5 officer navigating a rapidly evolving intelligence landscape while struggling to keep his personal life intact".

After getting a hunch, he connects with a British-Iranian man linked to the Stockport gangland who claims he has intelligence regarding a planned plot on the UK – though before he can learn anything, the man is killed by a gunman, who John in turn kills.

John then "finds himself under internal investigation, facing scrutiny from his superiors" including Simone Grant (Nikki Amuka-Bird), all while his partner Claire (Garai) "grapples with the secrecy that defines his world".

"As John becomes increasingly convinced of the involvement of a hardline faction of the Iranian regime, he also starts to worry there are enemies closer to home. But can he identify the target and avert the attack before it’s too late?"
