Foyle's War, the British detective series from Agatha Christie's Poirot and Midsommer Murders writer and Alex Rider creator Anthony Horowitz, is getting itself a new UK streaming home.

The show follows Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle, who investigates all manner of crimes in his incredibly methodical way, often butting heads with other figures of authority in the process.

Michael Kitchen plays the titular character, with Honeysuckle Weeks as Foyle's assistant Samantha Stewart. The show also featured guest appearances by David Tennant, Peter Capaldi, Emily Blunt, Rosamund Pike, Danny Dyer, Andrew Scott, and Charles Dance.

Running for eight seasons and 28 movie-length instalments between 2002 and 2015, Foyle's War was initially set during World War II, with later episodes moving ahead in time to the Cold War.

All episodes of the show coming to Netflix UK and Ireland from Wednesday 22 October. The show is also currently available in full on ITVX and Acorn TV.

What to Read Next

While it may have started off not going down well with critics — this review round-up published after the first episode aired is actually mostly negative — the show ended up becoming a beloved staple of British TV for over a decade.

"This is quality, smart stuff," wrote Common Sense Media, while PopMatters said "Michael Kitchen is terrific" and TV Insider stated "This terrific series—once canceled, then resurrected several years ago—is now really, truly one for the history books".

From fans, the show has a 96% positive user score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.6/10 average from over 20,000 ratings on IMDb.

"Kitchen is fantastic, so subtle that he's disarming. It's like Foyle's War was written just for him," wrote one fan. "War is the background, and does a fine job at that plus the hatred it generates in England provides a cornucopia of potential murder stories. And Foyle stands ready to untangle every mess."

"Foyle's War is an astonishing series. No mystery series comes close," wrote another, while a third said: "This is what great TV is. An outstanding series, taking place from the start of WW2 to the start of the Cold War, but told with the perspective of those 'back home' whom the Wars impacted. A remarkable achievement."

Foyle's War is available on ITVX and Acorn TV, and comes to Netflix on 22 October.
