Channel 5 has given fans a first look at Murder by Evensong, a brand new detective drama helmed by Harry Potter favourite, Matthew Lewis.

The show, which is slated for release in autumn, is based on the first novel in Reverend Richard Coles' best-selling book series, the Canon Clement Mysteries.

Adapted by Nick Hicks-Beach, who counts EastEnders and Midsomer Murders among his writing credits, the six-part drama will follow Canon Daniel Clement (Lewis), the Rector of Champton, whose cosy existence is upended by a strange murder.

An official synopsis released by Channel 5 reads: "Daniel (Lewis) shares Champton rectory with his widowed mother Audrey (Amanda Redman) – and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda.

"When Daniel announces a plan to modernise the church, the parish is suddenly divided. And then a body is found dead at the back of the church.

"As the police move in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together… and catch a killer."

Rounding out the cast, Amit Shah, Adam James, Marion Bailey, Tamzin Outhwaite, and Francis Magee will also appear, alongside a supporting cast that includes Meghan Treadway, Alexander Delamain, Amanda Hadingue and Nina Toussaint-White.

Lewis, who is perhaps best known for playing Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter film series, has been in high demand in recent years. Among his most recent roles, the British star has appeared in Happy Valley, All Creatures Great and Small, and Avoidance.

Speaking about his latest project, Lewis said he was "beyond thrilled to be throwing on the old dog collar and diving into the world of Champton so charmingly created by Rev. Richard Coles".

"I've been an admirer of his work for some time and love the characters and stories he's written," the actor continued (via Deadline). "It's an honour to work with this creative team and have the opportunity to bring the character of Canon Clement to life for fans of the book and new viewers alike."

Murder by Evensong will premiere on Channel 5 in the autumn.
