Butterfly, a brand new spy thriller led by Hawaii Five-0 star Daniel Dae Kim, has officially landed on Prime Video.

The newcomer, which consists of six episodes, has been adapted from the Boom! Studios' graphic novels by Arash Amel.

According to the steamer: "The series follows David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim), an enigmatic, highly unpredictable former U.S. intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him.

"He finds himself pursued by Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), a deadly, sociopathic young agent assigned to kill him, and Caddis, the sinister spy organisation where she works."

Joining Kim, who is also billed as an executive producer, are Piper Perabo, Louis Landau, Kim Ji-hoon, Park Hae-soo, Kim Tae-hee, Charles Parnell, Sean Dulake, and Nayoon Kim.

In early reviews, Collider commended Butterfly on its "wall-to-wall action", noting that the series "jumps into fluid, mesmerising choreography filmed from stylistic angles that heightens the sense of danger and talent displayed."

Echoing this sentiment, TV Guide described the show as "slick" and a "solid spy series" with "consistently compelling" action scenes, but argued that the family dynamics between David and his daughter felt "shallow".

The publication mused, Butterfly "sometimes plays like a show that forgot to include the emotional components needed to make it feel like it was about something other than action and intrigue."

Speaking about his latest project, Kim told the New York Post: "I've always wanted to make a show that bridged Korean culture with American culture because that’s who I am. And, I haven't seen anything like that on TV before.

"And so I thought, why not try and make it if I haven't seen it? We were able to adapt this comic book… The original was set in Europe, and I thought if we transplant it to Korea, because of what I look like, then it's a natural segue to address the themes that I'm interested in."

All six episodes of Butterfly are now available to stream on Prime Video.
