New UK drama Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes has confirmed a release date as well as a first look at its cast.

The series is based on the "devastating tragedy" of the killing of innocent De Menezes, who was fatally shot in 2005 by the Metropolitan Police after being mistaken for a terrorist in the wake of the 7/7 London attacks.

It has now been announced that the four-part series will premiere on Disney+ on April 30, with all episodes released at the same time.

A look at the cast has also been unveiled in a series of images, including Line of Duty's Daniel Mays as Cliff Todd, who was the Principal Forensic Investigator after 7/7.

Also shown are Game of Thrones' Conleth Hill as Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair, Years and Years' Russell Tovey as Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brian Paddick and Paddington in Peru's Emily Mortimer as Cressida Dick, the future Met Commissioner who at the time was Gold Commander of the surveillance operation tracking those presumed responsible.

Edison Alcaide plays De Menezes, while The Crown's Alex Jennings will portray barrister Michael Mansfield KC.

"As tension and uncertainty rises across the nation, a series of extraordinary events unfolds, leading to a critical misidentification," the synopsis adds.

"Jean Charles de Menezes, an innocent young Brazilian electrician on his way to work, is mistaken for a terrorist and shot dead at Stockwell station. What follows is a family’s fight for justice and answers, and the long-fought struggle to bring clarity to a situation that is clouded by confusion and silence."

Speaking previously about the show, writer Jeff Pope said: "This is an incredibly important story to tell, and we’ve got a heavyweight ensemble cast in place that will help us examine the events that led to the tragic shooting of the innocent Jean Charles de Menezes.

"He was just a commuter who was tracked for nearly an hour, with surveillance failing to correctly identify him, before he was shot dead on a crowded tube train, leaving his family to try and shine a light on the critical errors that led to this devastating tragedy."

Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes will premiere on Disney+ on April 30.
