Colin Firth's 1980s-set Lockerbie disaster series will be released in 2025, it has been confirmed.

The Bridget Jones star will appear in Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, a five-part limited drama series inspired by the events of the Lockerbie bombing, a terrorist attack on Pan Am Flight 103 that occurred on December 21, 1988.

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth will be released on Sky Atlantic on Thursday, January 2, streaming on NOW in the UK and Ireland and Peacock in the US.

The latest trailer gives fans a glimpse of The King's Speech star Firth as Jim Swire, a father who embarks on a journey across three decades for answers about the Pan AM Flight 103 bombing in which he lost his daughter Flora.

He stars alongside Slow Horses' Catherine McCormack, who plays Jim's wife Jane Swire.

A synopsis for the series reads: "On 21st December 1988, 259 passengers and crew were killed when Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie 38 minutes after take-off, with a further 11 residents losing their life as the plane came down over the quiet, Scottish town.

The series is based on Swire and Peter Biddulph's book The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father's Search for Justice.

The drama's lead writer is David Harrower, with guest writer Maryam Hamidi also contributing to an episode.

BAFTA Award-winning Otto Bathurst, whose previous credits include Peaky Blinders and The Winter King is the series' lead director, while Save Me's Jim Loach will also direct an episode.
