A Mother's Son spoilers follow.

ITV drama A Mother's Son came to its conclusion tonight (April 21) and viewers found out the identity of teenager Lorraine's (Juliet York) killer.

The second and final part of the series saw Rosie (Cold Feet's Hermione Norris) confront her son Jamie (Alexander Arnold) about her discovery of his bloody trainers – and he reacted with fury as he pushed her away.

Eventually, Jamie spilled some secrets to Rosie and her husband Ben (Doc Martin's Martin Clunes), revealing that he had been out smoking weed with his friend Sean (Josef Altin) on the night of Lorraine's murder and that the blood was from a dead fox he had found on the roadside and kicked.

But there was another twist when Ben found a pink phone hidden in Jamie's bedroom, which led Jamie to confess that he, Sean and Lorraine had hung out together and that Sean had "tried it on" with Lorraine.

Sean was swiftly arrested and confessed that he had sex with Lorraine on the day she died, but he denied knowing anything about her murder – and things started looking worse for Jamie when one of Ben's forensic scientist friends tested the blood from the trainers and confirmed that it was "100%" human blood.

Throughout the drama, many viewers thought that it would be far too obvious for prime suspect Jamie to be revealed as the killer, with many suggesting that Jamie's dad David (Paul McGann) or stepbrother Rob (Jake Davies) was the real killer and that Jamie was being framed or covering for someone:

But in the closing minutes of the episode, Jamie confessed to his mum that it really had been him who killed Lorraine in a moment of anger and he had been asking himself why he did it ever since.

"In the end I just think it's me, I think I'm just a bad person. And I'm sorry," he said.

Rosie insisted that she didn't believe he was a bad person but that he needed to be punished for his crime, and the drama ended with Rosie leading Jamie into the police station to make his confession.

The ending was rather disappointing for many viewers, who had been hoping for a big twist after all the mystery built up over the show's two episodes:

But the ending did provoke a lot of emotion, as Rosie was forced to confront the fact that her beloved child was a killer:
