Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks has revealed an emotional milestone for Mercedes McQueen in upcoming episodes – but there could be trouble ahead.

Last year, it was revealed that Mercedes was diagnosed with bowel cancer following the soap’s one-year time jump.

Since then, Mercedes has been undergoing treatment for cancer and she almost lost her life to the illness earlier this year.

In an unexpected turn of events, Mercedes was told in March that the chemotherapy was working and Cleo delivered the news that she would survive her illness.

In scenes set to air next week, Mercedes has finally finished chemotherapy. She leaves the hospital to a round of applause, and with Freddie by her side, she rings the bell, signalling the end of her treatment.

However, there could be trouble on the horizon as her son Bobby Costello, who was last seen on the Channel 4 soap in 2023, is set to make his return.

Bobby, who is currently in prison, was recently recast, with Waterloo Road star Zak Sutcliffe taking on the role for a dramatic new storyline, which has already begun filming.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that Mercedes’ former partner Warren Fox will soon make a brief return to the show.

While Warren and Mercedes' paths didn't cross when he returned during the flashback episode about the missing year, it's possible that the former couple will reunite in the present day.

Previously speaking about the real-life impact of her cancer storyline, Mercedes actor Jennifer Metcalfe said she was contacted by people who had been through similar experiences.

"I've heard from a lot of people who have gone through similar things to what Mercedes is going through and having that direct contact with them and how they've said how much it has helped them and raised awareness around bowel cancer has just been overwhelming,” she told The Sun.

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
