Hollyoaks star Nick Pickard explains Tony's big new decision

Hollyoaks' Nick Pickard has revealed that in the build-up to council elections this week, Tony will deliberately wreck his chances to ensure his rival Zara (Kelly Greenwood) secures victory.

Speaking to Inside Soap, Pickard explained that ever since the death of his best friend Luke, Tony has been feeling "a bit heartless".

"He says to Diane, 'All I'm talking about is me winning, but what am I going to do once I've won?'," he explained before saying that Zara has policies that will make the village a better place.

"Zara is campaigning to have a dementia-friendly community – she has some really good policies, whereas Tony doesn't have anything!"

Pickard added: "While Zara has a strong green agenda, Tony thinks they can just put flowers in the village and that will do. It's all very tongue-in-cheek."

Despite Tony not knowing "what he's talking about", Pickard said that standing in the election was all about business for his character.

"His original thinking was that if he was elected to the local council, he'd get more people through the doors of the pub!" he said.

"He's always thinking about the bottom line. But then he just liked the idea of doing the role; he's always looking out for people, so he may as well do it as a job."

So how will Tony ruin his chances?

"He gives a speech where he talks about his dodgy past," Pickard said. "Then there's this great bit where Scott comes in; he is Zara's campaign manager, so he does a remake of the Bonnie Tyler song 'I Need A Hero', but changes the words to 'I Need A Zara'! Then Tony gets involved and jumps in with the dancers."

The soap star continued by revealing he had a dancing background as a kid, but that while in character, Tony is "a bit of an old-man dancer".

Hollyoaks now streams first on All 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4 and at 7pm on E4.
