Hollyoaks star Nadine Mulkerrin has spoken about Cleo McQueen's new love triangle storyline for the first time.

Cleo seems to be heading for heartbreak, as her boyfriend Mitchell Deveraux (Imran Adams) is secretly developing feelings for Scott Drinkwell's drag alter ego Anita Tinkle.

The plot will ultimately lead to a temporary exit for Cleo, as Nadine and her Hollyoaks co-star Rory Douglas-Speed (Joel Dexter) are expecting their first child together.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Nadine explained: "We're only just starting with the storyline, but I'm excited about it and I think it's going to be really good. I hope the audience get behind it.

"This is not Cleo's first boyfriend to secretly like men. She went through a similar thing with Harry. That was my first storyline in the show, so it's quite fitting that this will be my last one before I go out for maternity leave!

"I'm glad the other person in the love triangle is Scott, because he's a character who you really root for as well. Cleo and Scott can never catch a break. Hopefully they won't fall out, as I don't want them to!

"I definitely think the story will be explored sensitively. We want the LGBTQ+ community to like it, so it will be told in a way that's respectful."

Digital Spy has already revealed that Scott and Mitchell will share a secret kiss in upcoming episodes, marking the beginning of a new relationship.

Asked how Cleo will react to Mitchell's betrayal, Nadine replied: "I think she's going to be shocked. But she's also quite a free-thinker. Myra was a lesbian, so she won't be angry about Mitchell's sexuality.

"I think Cleo will just be more hurt that she has been betrayed after putting her trust in somebody. I think ultimately she'd just want Mitchell to be happy and be himself.

"Cleo's exit is tied into this. There's something big that happens. I think they're going to write me out about a month before I'm due. They're going to have to come up with lots of ingenious ways to hide the bump!"

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
