Emmerdale left Cain and Moira Dingle in a desperate situation tonight, as he got some bad news regarding his cancer diagnosis. Then, to make matters worse, Moira discovered some of his regrettable actions from the past.

Tonight's episode of the ITV soap began with Moira giving her husband a pep-talk ahead of their consultation, saying that they would get through anything together. Cain, however, was a bit more downbeat than his wife.

As the pair waited in the hospital lobby, they shared an amusing exchange as they mocked various platitudes in regards to Cain's journey. Moira quipped that they needed the "equivalent of a swear jar" whenever a generic phrase was uttered.

The couple then headed in for the chat with Ms Rhodes, with Cain wanting to "cut to the chase" rather than recall some of his symptoms. The specialist said the surgery largely went well, but that there was a chance that the cancer had spread.

Ms Rhodes stressed that further tests would need to be taken, but that it was, sadly, "highly likely" that the cancer had spread. She explained further that radiotherapy may be an option, but not for a while yet.

Cain and Moira wanted more information on what the future could look like if he had to undergo radiotherapy. Ms Rhodes explained that any current issues that he was facing could become permanent, and this understandably worried the married couple.

As they returned home, Moira struggled to contain her emotions, but the pair put on brave faces as the children arrived. Despite them saying that everything was okay, Kyle began to suspect that they may not be telling the full story.

After Kyle spoke with Graham Foster, he returned home and said he knew that the pair were hiding something. Belle and Sam then arrived, with Cain losing his temper when another generic phrase came his way.

Moira wanted to speak with Mackenzie Boyd later on, but she was greeted by Charity instead. The latter discussed her personal situation, but had a few drinks, and then inadvertently let slip that Cain had come onto her while Moira was behind bars.

As Moira's anger grew, Charity played it down by saying that he "didn't mean it", and was merely another example of his "self-destructive" streak. Moira wasn't having it, and tearfully stormed off.

Moira mentioned the "seduction attempt" when Cain returned, but it remains to be seen if the couple will recover from the crisis, as the soap now goes on a two-day break due to the scheduling changes.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 8pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
