A recent Emmerdale scene has received nearly 300 complaints from viewers.

Last week saw Vinny Dingle meet up with a man named Mike who had also apparently been struggling with his sexuality, after talking online.

But it turned out that Mike was just out to learn Vinny's secrets and use them to blackmail him, and cruelly beat the fan-favourite character up, leaving him battered and lying on the ground.

Viewers dubbed the episode as "really disturbing" and the "nastiest ever", claiming that it was too violent for something at the pre-watershed time of 7.30pm.

Now broadcast regular Ofcom has revealed in its latest weekly round-up that the episode has received 279 complaints.

"Inclusion or omission of a programme on this list is not indicative that Ofcom is investigating the broadcast," the website states. "The number of complaints received is not an indication of how serious an issue is."

Even Vinny actor Bradley Johnson admitted that scenes would probably have "everyone was screaming at the telly".

He also shared his advice for people struggling with their own sexuality.

"Even though there's forums online for help and people like that, just confide in your family," he said.

"And having that friendship with Kammy and Vinny, he really should be confiding in his friends and family rather than an online forum, but he's a confused lad at the minute."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX and YouTube.
