Ahead of the pair’s wedding day next week, Chase explained that he knew early on how his character’s story would progress.
"I knew most of what will come up for him," he said. "I don’t want to say too much, but they made it clear when I joined what route the story would take. But I think that is what makes the role so much more interesting and complex. You want to play complex characters, don’t you!"

Tom is upset that Belle doesn’t want to take his last name, and piles on the pressure until she eventually changes her mind.
A later argument ends with Tom storming off, leaving Belle with no idea whether he will show up at the altar.
While the pair do get married, in scenes that will air on Thursday, February 15, the Dingles’ eccentric reception leaves Tom furious that Belle’s family have ruined their big day for him.

On Tom’s worrying behaviour, Chase said: "I think Tom is one of those guys that when he gets in a relationship he puts all his eggs in one basket. And he’s done that with Belle as he loves her so much. And married her within a few months of being together. I think he is so afraid of losing her.
"And that is partly why he is so insecure and I think partly why he acts in such a controlling way. Because he thinks that is how he will keep her. He loves Belle and prefers them just to be together and exclude everyone else."
Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
