Manpreet Sharma has been left devastated by Charles Anderson's behaviour in Emmerdale.

The vicar has been reeling over his father's death, as he'd tried to frame dad Victor for a crime in the hours before he passed away last month.

Manpreet has encouraged Charles to tell his mum Claudette the truth about Victor's death, but the vicar has thus far refused to do it.

Charles returned to the village in Thursday's episode (September 28) after taking a break to clear his head, but his time away proved to be no relief at all.

He was ostensibly coming home to tell his mother the truth, yet he couldn't bring himself to actually do it when Claudette vowed not to come to Victor's funeral.

Charles ended up drinking alone at the Woolpack, where he first rejected Jai Sharma's offer to talk since he recently lost his own father.

"I know where you are, but I don't [want to talk]. I'm handling it," Charles insisted.

Tom King was the next to offer his condolences to Charles, only for the vicar to turn on him when Tom mentioned they'd both had troubled fathers.

"Don't get me wrong. I don't think your dad was anywhere near as bad as mine. Mine killed someone," Tom explained. "But, it hurts, doesn't it?"

Tom encouraged Charles not to blame himself and insisted "it would get easier over time", yet Charles angrily called his words "cliche crap from a greetings card".

Refusing to back down, Tom said he understood Charles' anger but encouraged him to accept that Victor's death wasn't his fault.

"I don't need your sympathy. I don't need your opinions. And I certainly don't need your help," Charles snapped at him.

The situation got tense as Gail refused to give Charles another drink and Jai tried to convince him he'd had enough alcohol. Charles venomously struck back with a reference to Jai's addiction issues.

Tom demanded Charles apologise to Jai, only for the vicar to slam his head down on the bar! Ethan, Manpreet and Claudette had to talk Charles down from seriously hurting Tom.

Charles immediately realised he'd gone too far when he saw Claudette and tried to apologise to Tom, before storming out as Ethan demanded to know what had got into his dad.

The Andersons tried to convince Tom not to report Charles to the police, with Manpreet stopping an irate Ethan from also going after Tom.

"We musn't make this worse than it already is," Manpreet told him.

Manpreet later offered to check Tom for a concussion and tried to apologise for what Charles had done. Tom explained to her that Charles had just "flipped" without any provocation.

After Tom agreed not to phone the police, Manpreet went after Charles to try to convince him to come clean once and for all to Claudette.

"The guilt you're feeling, the way it's eating you up, it's proof you're a good man," she insisted.

Manpreet begged Charles to "fix what [he'd] broken", but he admitted he didn't think he could do that. The episode ended with Manpreet heartbroken over Charles's behaviour.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
