Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale bosses have announced that a shocking twist is on the way for Mary Goskirk's romance storyline.

Mary's love interest Faye, who was introduced earlier this year, is not all she seems and future episodes will expose her true agenda.

Emmerdale's executive producer Jane Hudson shared the news with Digital Spy and other media at a press event this week, warning of heartbreak for Mary.

Hudson explained: "We've got a lovely love story playing on screen with Mary. We see Mary falling in love with Faye and it's her first relationship since coming out.

"She's been really vulnerable and she's really put herself out there and unfortunately it's not going to be a happy ending. Mary is going to have her heart broken.

"I think what's really relevant for this story is how easy it is to be scammed, how easy it is to be taken in, how easy it is for love to stop you thinking logically.

"I think it doesn't matter what age you are, we're all vulnerable to be tricked and to be scammed and to be catfished."

Mary met Faye via an app and hoped that this could be her happy ending after a couple of disastrous dates.

Viewers will see the storyline begin to take its new twist next week, as Faye tells Mary that there has been a fire at the women's refuge. Mary is concerned and proposes a fundraiser to help.

Hudson added: "It's a really heartbreaking story and Louise [Jameson, who plays Mary] is just brilliant. She plays it so brilliantly.

"There's a lovely humour but then there's such sadness. I think you're all going to enjoy that story."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
